Papers primarily documenting Larkin's work as associate general counsel (1947-1949) and general counsel (1950-1951) in the Office of the Secretary of Defense; together with a small amount of documentation of his work in 1947 with the Senate Special Committee to Investigate the National Defense Program. Summaries of daily activities file contains remarkably detailed information in the form of often substantive notes regarding his meetings and telephone conversations in a form like annotated daily appointment calendars, ending in April 1950, about a year and a half before Larkin left the Defense Department. Chronological file appears to be a comprehensive collection of the correspondence and memoranda (Oct. 1947-Sept. 1951) including material relating to the B-36 aircraft, President's Air Policy Commission, National Security Act, military procurement, establishment of an Air Force Academy, Saudi Arabian oil, Uniform Code of Military Justice, shipbuilding, unification of the armed services, proposed legislation affecting defense policy, selective service system, St. Lawrence Seaway project, and Hoover Commission recommendations; together with a small amount of material relating to his service in 1947 with the Senate Special Committee to Investigate the National Defense Program. Subject file chiefly relates to the Uniform Code of Military Justice and Department of the Navy General Court-Martial Review Board and Larkin's service on a committee established by the Secretary of Defense in 1948 to study the possibility of developing a uniform system of military justice that would be applicable to all the military services; together with some material relating to Secretary of Defense Forrestal's death and personal correspondence relating to Larkin's government career and other matters. Personal correspondence file contains carbon copies of outgoing correspondence about subjects that are clearly personal in character: acknowledgments of congratulations on his new position, letters to friends, letters about social engagements, and the like. Printed materials file is composed primarily of U.S. House and Senate documents and reprints of two articles written by Larkin.
